Thanks to everyone who rolled up their sleeves at the work party on 17th (and those people who couldn't make the work party, but spent a couple of hours earlier in the week sprucing up the green).

The highlight of the work party was watching the newly painted flagpole going back up.

Felling of Fir Tree

Posted: 8th May 2015

At the Village Green AGM on 29th April a proposal was put forward to take down the large fir tree which sits on the edge of the path between the playground and the gate at the western end of the village green.

The tree is in poor condition, is out of proportion with the rest of the green and is forcing up the tarmac path.

It was agreed at the meeting that there should be a consultation period so that residents in the village could put forward their opinions/objections. If you have any comments on this matter please contact John Osborne (Village Green Chairman) or David Hamer (Village Green Vice-Chairman).

Josh's Journey

Posted: 26th August 2014

Many congratulations to Josh Cooper on achieving the A level results he needed to be accepted into his first-choice university, Chester, to study for a BA Honours in English Language.

Those of you who have known Josh for a while will be aware what a great achievement this is.

When Josh was 11yrs old he struggled to cope with high school. The staff at Cartmel Priory School were very supportive of him at that time (special thanks goes to Dr Williams and Mrs Dodwell) and it was decided by the professionals that he should be home educated for a while until he was able to re-join high school.

The Coopers would like to thank all those people in the village who helped him with his education during this time: John Stewart for getting him through maths and building his confidence, Jane Pickles for helping with English, Allan Lovegrove for his offer of support in geography, Barbara Osbourne for dispatching her mum Bridget to act as chaperone when Josh was with his professional tutor, and a special thanks to Debbie Perry for helping him with just about everything else, taking him on numerous educational trips, and being his second 'mum'.

It was almost two years before Josh went back to school, but by the time he left at sixteen he had gained ten GCE's, plus an award voted for by fellow students for 'the student they most aspired to be like'.

Josh went on to Ulverston Sixth Form College where he worked very hard for two years and proved the limited expectations of the professionals to be incorrect by achieving A levels in English Language (B), Sociology (B), Psychology (D) and General Studies (E), plus an AS level in History (C).

After studying for his BA (Hons) at Chester, Josh hopes to specialise in speech therapy and has recently been doing work experience in Penrith, helping people who have suffered strokes.

Many congratulations to Josh for his achievements. Roy, Jenny and Hannah are very proud of him and send a big thank you to all those who have helped him on his journey.

Superfast Broadband Update

Posted: 30th July 2014

In Cumbria as a whole, the rollout programme is on track. The main ring of fibre optic cabling is in place round the County and the main population centres Ulverston included have enabled cabinets.

Best guess is that it will be 2015 before our Parish gets its fibre optic connections then expect a flurry of activity. We can expect to get to know where and when some six months before it happens and at that stage we can look to see where the gaps in provision may arise and try to get the optimum solutions for the Parish.

Bingo Success

Posted: 24th March 2014

The bingo evening held last friday in Bouth Village Hall was a great success. An excellent evening was enjoyed by all who attended. The event raised 305, including donations from those who were unable to attend.

Thanks go to those who helped make it a success:

  • Ron for calling the numbers in his own indomitable style
  • Ali for all the organisation, providing the ever popular 'Chocolate Bunnies' and losing sight of her kitchen table for the preceding fortnight under piles of raffle prizes
  • Roger for supervising proceedings on the night
  • Paul, who made sure no-one got in without being relieved of some cash
  • Donald for his white 'Chateau Barnside' which oiled the throats and neutralised the brain cells

Thanks also go to our 'commercial sponsors' (that makes us sound very major league!):

  • Mike and Karen from the Haverthwaite Railway
  • Ken and Sue from Crakeside Chippy
  • The 'lovely' Peter (so says the Gazette) from Greenodd Butchers
  • Lloyd from Greenodd Stores

Thanks also to all those who attended and were hassled into parting with their hard cash, and to those who gave raffle prizes and then bought raffle tickets to win their own stuff back again - we have been asked if the grey rabbit will be making another appearance next year?
